Everything worth asking.

Getting started

I installed it and nothing happened.

That is the intended behaviour. GhostCopy starts hidden, adds a tray icon and waits for its hotkey. Look for the ghost in your menu bar or system tray to confirm it is running, then press Option + Space on a Mac or Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows.

Do I need an account?

Not to start. The first launch signs you in anonymously with a random ID and no email address, so you can send a clip before deciding anything. Adding an email or a Google sign‑in later keeps the same account and the same history.

How do I add a second device?

Sign it into the same account and it joins immediately. If encryption is on there is one extra step — the new device needs your passphrase, and the only way to get it there is from a device that already has it.

When it misbehaves

The hotkey does nothing.

Something else has claimed the same combination — that is almost always the cause, and you can rebind GhostCopy in Settings. On macOS the default is Option+Space, which launchers such as Raycast and Alfred also like to take. No permission is involved: macOS does not ask for Accessibility access to register the hotkey.

My phone is not receiving anything.

Check that notification permission was granted, because delivery rides on it. Aggressive battery optimisation on some Android builds will also hold notifications back — excluding GhostCopy from it fixes that.

Why can the phone not detect what I copy?

Both iOS and Android block background clipboard reads, and they are right to. Sending from the phone is deliberately a paste‑then‑send action instead. Receiving is automatic in both directions.

Encryption

Is my clipboard encrypted?

Once you set a passphrase, yes — content is encrypted on your device before the network call, and what we store is ciphertext. Until you set one, encryption is off and clip content sits in plain text on our infrastructure, restricted to your account but readable by us in principle. Set a passphrase if that matters to you.

Everything shows as locked on my new device.

That device does not have your passphrase yet. Open Settings on one that does, show the transfer QR code, and scan it. Nothing is lost — the whole history decrypts the moment the key lands.

I lost my passphrase. Can you reset it?

No, and it is not a policy we can make an exception to — we never had a copy. Clips encrypted with a lost passphrase cannot be recovered by anyone, including us. You can clear the passphrase and start fresh, which leaves the old clips permanently unreadable.

Why is there no cloud backup of the passphrase?

There was one, and it was removed. It derived its key from your email and user ID with a salt compiled into the app — every input was known to the server, so anyone with database access could have recovered the passphrase and decrypted everything. That is not a backup, it is a spare key under the mat.

Your data

Does it watch my clipboard in the background?

No. Nothing is captured until you open the window and send it. Anything you copied and did not send never existed as far as GhostCopy is concerned.

How do I delete my account and everything in it?

Email us from the address on the account. Deletion removes the clip rows along with the account — there is no soft‑delete holding period. See the privacy policy for what is stored in the first place.

Security reports

Same address, with “security” in the subject line. Those get answered first. Please give us a chance to fix it before publishing.

One thing we will never ask you for: your clipboard contents, or your passphrase. We cannot read the first and do not have the second, and no support request will ever need you to work around that.
